Aslında okuldayken Muse`un üç elemanı da farklı gruplarda çalıyordu. Kısa bir süre sonra beraber bir grup kurma kararını aldılar ve gruba ilk önce Gothic Plague, Fixed Penalty ve Rocket Baby Dolls gibi isimler koydular (bu grup isimlerinin kronolojisi belli değildir, Muse birçok röportajda birbirine ters düşen bilgiler vermiştir). En sonunda Muse isminde karar kıldılar.

1994 yılında Rocket Baby Dolls adı altında yerel bir müzik yarışmasında sahnedeki her şeyi kırarak birinci oldular. Bunun üzerine elemanlar üniversiteye gitmek yerine müzik de kariyer yapmak istediler.
